Cape May County Prosecutor, Jeffrey H. Sutherland was initially nominated by New Jersey Governor Christie and sworn into office on December 21, 2017. Prosecutor Sutherland was re-nominated by Governor Murphy and appointed to a second 5-year term on January 23, 2024.
Prosecutor Sutherland served as President of the County Prosecutor’s Association of New Jersey from June 2022 until November 2023.

On September 1, 2019, New Jersey Supreme Court Chief Justice Stuart Rabner appointed Prosecutor Sutherland to a two-year term on the Supreme Court Criminal Practice Committee Prosecutor Sutherland was re-appointed to a fourth two-year term in 2025 and continues to serve on the Committee.
He also served as a Working Group member for the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office 2019 Internal Affairs revisions and the New Jersey Attorney General Brady / Giglio directive issued in 2019.
In January 2023, Chief Justice Rabner appointed Prosecutor Sutherland to the Joint Committee on Criminal Justice Reform to review and assess the New Jersey Criminal Justice Reform Act of 2014 that was implemented on January 1, 2017. The Committee created a report with recommendations that was submitted to the Governor and Legislature.
Prosecutor Sutherland also serves on the Attorney General’s Statewide Steering Committee that developed and implemented the ARRIVE program, where members of law enforcement co-respond with mental health professionals to assist individuals suffering from a mental health crisis.
